What to Do About R-22?

Don’t Sweat It With 1st Choice

It’s happened to everyone. You find a food you love and suddenly it disappears from the shelves. After some digging, you learn the thing you crave has been discontinued.

Well, food isn’t the only thing that gets phased out. Currently, the government is weeding out R-22 refrigerant. Labeled as an ozone-depleting substance by the Environmental Protection Agency, the plan is to completely eliminate R-22 by 2020. However, there are still many air conditioners that use R-22.

Rather than holding on to your R-22-dependent system and paying more for AC repair in Howell, NJ, we encourage you to replace your system with one that uses a different type of refrigerant. To learn why, read on.

Why the Phase-Out?

Due to environmental concerns, the EPA ordered the phase-out of R-22 decades ago. This mandate stems from an initiative to protect the Earth’s ozone layer. Now in 2017, we are quickly approaching the 2020 threshold. So it’s only a matter of time before R-22 ceases to exist.

The Catch-22 of R-22

If you own a system that uses R-22, you can’t cool your home without it. But within a few years, you won’t be able to cool your home with it. It’s the ultimate catch-22.

There is, however, an alternative. The most common option in the market is R-410A. Unlike R-22, this refrigerant does not harm the ozone layer and is better for the environment.

What Should I Do Next?

The most cost-effective solution is to replace your air conditioner. With the price of R-22 at an all-time high, this refrigerant has essentially become a money pit for homeowners. To avoid falling into the trap of costly repairs, we recommend parting ways with your older system and welcoming a new, energy-efficient air conditioner.

Here are some other reasons why you should consider a replacement:

  • If your unit is 10 years or older, think of what it can cost you in the long run.  If your R-22 system isn’t leaking, you can get a few more years out of it with minor repairs.  We’ll be there when you need us, but those smaller repairs can add up quickly. If the system is leaking, we’ll show you what we’ve found and do a cost analysis with our transparent pricing method so you can see the benefits and make an informed decision.
  • Energy efficiency. Older systems can’t match the efficiency capabilities of newer ones. Today’s units are built to save you energy and money wherever possible.
  • Rebate incentives. To offset the cost of a new system, many manufacturers offer energy-saving rebates. As an independent American Standard Dealer, we honor American Standard rebates and seasonal promotions. Contact us to see if you qualify for any current offers.
  • Industry-leading products. 1st Choice installs American Standard products because they are the best in our industry. Delivering optimal performance, quiet operation and more, these systems give our customers ultimate comfort and long-term savings. A sister company to Trane, they’re even made locally in nearby Trenton, NJ.
